![]() ![]() ![]() The final book in the series was released in 1977 then there was a long pause before her next novel, Sun Bubble (1990), appeared. Most were well received by critics, and a few sold strongly, with her sword-and-sorcery saga Atlan - which kicked off in 1963 and eventually ran to four hefty volumes - scoring with audiences in the United States and, in translation, throughout Europe. Though there was a four-year hiatus before her third book, Attic Summer (1963), appeared, her output over the next decade seemed to bear out her youthful boast: between 19, Gaskell released nine more novels. AN EDITOR’S NOTE in the April 1959 issue of Argosy magazine, prefacing the first published short story by Jane Gaskell, indicated that the British author “plans to write a novel a year till she is fifty.” At the tender age of 18, Gaskell was already well on her way: her first novel, Strange Evil (1957), came out when she was only 16 and her second, King’s Daughter (1959), the same year as her Argosy debut. ![]()
